Smoking

With daughters in Shidduchim,
For a few years already,
I've come to learn a little bit,
About the Shidduch redting.

Boys in black hats, suits,
Wearing white shirts and a tie,
Must be a big Masmid,
Be learning 'til all times.

Personality-wise? Top notch,
He's totally geshmak.
Only one more question now-
Does he smoke, or not?

Um, you see, it's like this,
It's just a little bit.
One now, one then, one in between,
You know it's just for shtick.

Really now, you think it's fine?
I'm so glad I spoke to you.
This shidduch should be perfect,
You see, my daughter - she smokes too!

Now, dear reader, think a bit,
Try to be objective.
What would your reaction be?
Surely you'd reject it!

Why with boys is it allowed,
So quickly tolerated,
But if a girl would pick it up,
It's much more complicated.

Let's unite, dear parents,
Not allow this to continue.
No more smoking, anyone!
V'Nishmartem M'od L'Nafshoseinu!

(No, I'm not a parent, but after hearing my parents complain about this for a few years already, I found it easier to write it from their viewpoint.)

That was very cute and well written. I really hate the thought of marrying a smoker-but I wonder if I am in position to be turning boys down over small(?) things...

I don't think that smoking is a small thing. It's something that affects not only the smoker, but those around him too.

Hey, good point..we really should start a rebellion. Let all women unite and start smoking...all kidding aside, you (and your parents) make a lot of sense. I once watched a really frightening video of how smoking can harm you and since then, I won't consider a smoker..if only they could all see what it's doing to them.

Smoking, ech!
And I know what you mean, though I think the distinction is that if a fellow smokes it just makes his voice sound deeper. But if a girl does take up smoking she will end up sounding like, well a women who smokes. ( I just made this up on the spot. who knows?)

Anon, the funniest thing happened at work the other day. Someone mentioned smoke and this girl turns to me and very excitedly asks me if I saw the poem a mother wrote about girls smoking in the yated. :) I had to bite my tongue not to say, yeah, it's a girl not a mother and I "know" her! ;)

I love it when that happens! Thanx for sharing!

I take a very selfish attitude toward smoking...if the guy doesn't care about his health or the health of the people around him fine, be selfish, but I'll be just as selfish saying I'd prefer to have a husband when I get old and not deal with the nasty effects of smoking (lung cancer is only one...gingvitis, still borns, hacking cough, leathery skin...) also, ciggarettes are expensive, I plan on living a kollel lifestyle and it simply does not fit in the budget, I'll give up my manicures, you give your cigarettes, fair exchange?

I agree with you, Maintenance. I couldn't have said it better.
